IPA Systems used on this platform
English is spoken with different accents around the world. Although accents vary slightly, the phoneme system is largely the same. To make pronunciation easier to learn, we use two widely accepted IPA systems:
General American (GA) IPA is used for articles from the United States, Vietnam, and articles by Topics.
Received Pronunciation (RP) IPA is used for articles from Australia.
VicaTalk currently uses the following broad IPA conventions for learner-facing pronunciation guides:
General American (GA): /ə/ for schwa, /ər/ for stressed r-colored vowel, /ɜr/ where needed in dictionary examples.
Received Pronunciation (RP): /ə/ for schwa, /ɜː/ for stressed NURSE vowel, with non-rhotic treatment in coda positions.
These transcriptions are optimized for learning clarity and consistency across our content, and may differ slightly from some dictionaries.
